The Huskies football team may not be giving the University of Washington anything to brag about this year, but Reuters and Clarivate Analytics folks have given the university plenty to brag about.

In their annual rankings of the world’s most innovative public and private universities, the UW was the #1 public university.

The rankings considered factors such as patent filings and research paper citations to determine which institution did the most to “advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries.”The UW filed 561 patents over a five-year period. A third were granted. The university has consistently brought in more than two percent of federal research funding, peaking at $1.6 billion in 2017. More than 20 companies have been founded by faculty of the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science in recent years, including OctoML, which serves as an operating system for machine learning models.

The 10 most innovative public and private universities in the world are (drumroll):

  1. Stanford University (USA)
