Building a pipeline of community-driven projects.

The federal Opportunity Zones program has been made permanent with the Governor’s new designation list to the Department of Treasury required by July of 2026. All current zones must be redesignated under revised eligibility criteria established by federal law. The new 10-year designation period will run from January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2036.

Washington currently has 139 designated Opportunity Zones established in 2018 and is currently active through December 31, 2028. The Washington State Department of Commerce is conducting a comprehensive analysis of all census tracts to determine eligibility under the new criteria and will coordinate the redesignation process with impacted parties and external partners.
