weather-snowstormPredicting the weather is a lot more than letting us know if we need to take a bumbershoot when we leave home. Communities depend on accurate weather predictions to prepare for severe weather events, to have resources and aid on hand to help protect families and businesses. NOAA’s National Weather Service is ramping up their computer modeling capacity with supercomputers from Cray, a Seattle-based company.

As a sub-contractor to IBM, Cray’s supercomputers will provide 10x the current capacity increasing the accuracy and detail of NOAA’s weather modeling. Cray has been advancing the capabilities of computing since 1972 and is a leader in the supercomputer arena.

Washington State continues to be on the cutting edge in personal and business computing with 303,100 technology based workers, including 107,098 in software and computer services.
