With an eye on upending the way goods are moved across the U.S., Seattle startup Convoy has netted a nice nest egg to bring its vision to life.

Like an Uber or Lyft for people, Convoy connects truckers with loads, bypassing the traditional system of brokers and manual scheduling. The company’s goal instead is to automate the entire process so shipments can be scheduled through an app, leaving truck drivers with less down time and a creating a more efficient use of existing transportation infrastructure. The funding round was led by Y Combinator’s Continuity Fund in Silicon Valley. Bill Gates also chipped in, as did LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.
